SUN VALLEY: Summary & Full Results
VERNON, BC – CASCAR wrapped up its two-race swing through western Canada on Saturday night at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, British Columbia. Less than a week after winning his first Super Series race in almost two years, at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park, Castrol Dodge Charger driver DJ Kennington returned to victory lane with a victory at Sun Valley.
It was a dream trip west for the St. Thomas, Ontario racer who started on the pole for the Sun Valley 300 and led a total of 50 laps of the Vernon feature en route to the two-race sweep. The veteran racer also collected a win in his 100-lap qualifying sprint race on Friday night at Vernon.
And while Kennington was thrilled with the accomplishment, second-place finisher Brad Graham was frustrated not to win his first-ever Super Series main event. The Challenger / Logel’s Dodge Charger driver led late in the Sun Valley 300 but saw first place slip away when Kennington made the winning move with just three laps to go in the race.
Kennington’s power trip through western Canada was enough to blast him into third-place in the overall standings as the Super Series returns to Ontario’s Mosport Speedway, next weekend, for Race #8 of the 12-event schedule. Before heading westward, Kennington was 10th in the points.
Home Hardware Chevy driver Don Thomson Jr. claimed the final podium position at Vernon to maintain his hold on first place in the standings as he drives for his fifth consecutive Super Series National championship. Thomson led for much of the race but his final two-tire change, late in the event, didn’t produce the handling conditions he needed for the final run to the checkered flag and took him out of contention for the win.
Canadian Tire Chevy driver Peter Gibbons was the fourth and final competitor to finish on the lead lap in the Sun Valley 300, which was good enough to maintain third-place in the National points. MOPAR Dodge Charger driver Ron Beauchamp Jr. completed the top five finishers at Vernon, one lap down to the leaders.
Multi-time CASCAR Western Series champion Kevin Dowler was once again the top finishing Western regular in the race, which doubled as a full points event for the Western Series. The Edmonton, ON racer brought his EMCO Ford Taurus across the line in ninth-place.
During qualifying for the Sun Valley 300 on Friday evening, DJ Kennington posted the fastest lap to secure the sixth pole of his career. Following time trials, the St. Thomas, ON racer went on to win the first 100 lap qualifying sprint race. In the second 100 lapper, Super Series sophomore racer J.R. Fitzpatrick led the entire race distance en route to collecting his first-ever checkered flag on CASCAR’s top circuit.
The next CASCAR Super Series event takes place on August 6 at the Mosport Speedway oval.

SUN VALLEY EVENT PREVIEW
Preview: Sun Valley Speedway
VERNON, BC – Canada’s top stock car series will make its inaugural appearance at Sun Valley Speedway this weekend when the CASCAR Super Series visits Vernon, British Columbia’s scenic half-mile tri-oval. The format for the event will be the same as for last weekend’s MOPAR 500 Weekend in Calgary.
Time trials will open the weekend racing program on Friday night (July 29). The drivers with the two best times will lock themselves into the top two starting positions for Saturday’s 300-lap feature event. Friday night’s racing program will also include a pair of 100-lap, full-points qualifying sprint races. These Twin 100s will set the rest of the field for Saturday’s main event.
While the majority of the Super Series competitors in action this weekend at Sun Valley will be seeing the track for the first time, multi-time Western Series champ Kevin Dowler has lots of experience at the unique facility. The EMCO Ford driver – who has several Super Series road racing wins to his credit – is hoping his knowledge of Sun Valley helps him earn his first-ever Super Series feature win on an oval.
“I’m excited about racing at Vernon,” said Dowler, who lives in Edmonton, Alberta. “The Western Series has probably raced there 16 times or so and I believe we have half-a-dozen wins. If there’s a chance of me getting it done in a Super Series oval race, I really think it could be this one.”
Describing Sun Valley’s configuration, Dowler says it’s a special place. “It’s just a great little racetrack. It’s fast and it’s been good to us. There’s no other track like it in Canada. There are two totally different turns at each end of the track. There’s progressive banking in turns 3 and 4, and turn 1 is just about flat. And there’s a kink in the middle of the front straight. It’s almost like a small road course, or maybe like Richmond International Raceway, with alternate ends.”
Dowler, who is riding high after winning his Twin 100 race in Calgary and scoring a fifth-place finish in the MOPAR 300, is banking on his extensive experience at Sun Valley to make a difference this weekend. The veteran racer joked about his newfound popularity among the visiting eastern-based Super Series regulars. “As the old story goes, I was surprised how many Eastern friends I had when we started talking about the Vernon race, last weekend in Calgary. Everyone was my friend when they wanted to know about Sun Valley. ‘What gear? What springs?’ I told them all, ‘You’ve got lots of gears and springs… try ‘em all.’”
SUN VALLEY NOTEBOOK: EMCO has sponsored a three-stage pit stop competition in the region in advance of this weekend’s inaugural CASCAR Super Series stop at Sun Valley Speedway. The first portion took place on Wednesday afternoon in Kamloops, BC. The second is scheduled for Thursday afternoon (1 p.m.) at The Brick in Kelowna, BC. The final Pit Stop Contest starts at 4 p.m. at Watkins Motors in Vernon, BC… After the racing action is finished on Friday evening, well-known country music artist Lee Dinwoodee will headline a concert for the fans at Sun Valley… In addition to being a Super Series race, the races at Sun Valley are also full points events for the CASCAR Western Series…

MOPAR 300: DJ Kennington wins the MOPAR 300 at Calgary’s Race City Motorsports Park
The St. Thomas, ON resident led a total of 125 laps of the MOPAR 300, including the final 15 tours after passing two-time National champ Peter Gibbons, who showed the way from lap 202 to 285. Gibbons went on to finish second in the race in his Canadian Tire Chevy, ahead of veteran Super Series competitor Dave Jacombs of Mt. Hope, ON in his Lou’s BBQ Ford Taurus. Jacombs’ run was all the more impressive considering he lined up 18th on the starting grid.
Fourth-place went to last year’s rookie of the year runner-up J.R. Fitzpatrick of Ayr, ON. The Cambridge Rigging Chevy driver continues to impress in his sophomore season on the Super Series tour. Rounding out the top five in Calgary was Edmonton, AB resident Kevin Dowler. The multi-time Western Series champ was the top finishing western competitor in the MOPAR 300, which also served as a points race for the Western Series.
Points leader Don Thomson was scored in 14th-place after the motor in his Home Hardware Chevy expired with five laps to go. Fortunately for Thomson, his nearest rivals in the points chase (Mark Dilley and Kerry Micks) also experienced their own troubles, so Thomson will retain a healthy points lead heading to the next event. Gibbons’ solid finish in the MOPAR 300 moved him to second in the standings following the conclusion of the first half of the schedule.
A pair of 100-lap qualifying sprint races took place on Friday night at Race City Motorsport Park. In addition to setting the starting field for the MOPAR 300, they were also full Super Series points races. PowerWater Ford driver Kerry Micks and Kevin Dowler (EMCO Ford) picked up checkered flags in their respective sprint races. Kennington’s win in the MOPAR 300 was his first Super Series victory since August 9, 2003 at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache.
The next CASCAR Super Series event takes place next weekend (July 29-30) at Sun Valley Motor Speedway in Vernon, British Columbia. The race will follow the same Twin 100 plus a 300 lap feature format at the MOPAR 500 Weekend.
POINT STANDINGS: After 6 events. MOPAR 500 Weekend: Twin 100s and Starting Grid
DOWLER & MICKS WIN CENTENNIAL 100s
CALGARY, AB - The first two 100 lap races of the MOPAR PARTS 500 Weekend at Race City, the Centennial 100s, ended up with a pair of veterans taking the winners’ trophies in front of 3,615 fans.
In the Alberta Centennial 100, Ontario drivers Dave Whitlock (#39) who will start on pole in tomorrow¹s 300-lapper) and Peter Gibbons (#1) battled for the entire race with Kevin Dowler of Sherwood Park (#35) making frequent challenges from third.
When Gibbons slipped coming off turn two on the last lap, Whitlock stuffed his Dodge¹s nose into the resulting gap at the bottom of the track. The two rubbed fenders all the way into turn three. When they slid high, Dowler leaped his EMCO #35 under them both and crossed the finish line a few feet ahead of Whitlock. Ron Beauchamp of Windsor, Ontario managed to nip around Gibbons for third.
In the Saskatchewan Centennial 100, Kerry Micks of Mount Albert, Ontario out-dragged Don Thompson of Hamilton, Ontario at the green flag and held off every challenge to take the win. Thompson was second and D. J. Kennington of St. Thomas was third.
Spectator gates open today at 1 p.m. for the MOPAR FanFest. The autograph session will be from 5pm to 6pm and driver introductions begin at 6:30. The MOPAR PARTS 300, Canada¹s biggest stock car race, begins at 7pm.

CASCAR: MOPAR 500 Weekend Preview
The annual extravaganza at the high-banked, half-mile oval features a ‘Speedweeks-like’ format in the lead-up to the main event. On Friday evening (July 22), time trials will set the front row for the MOPAR 300. Immediately afterwards, a pair of 100-lap MOPAR 100 qualifying sprint races will establish the rest of the starting field for Saturday night’s (July 23) 300-lap main event.
Dave Whitlock of Wyoming, ON won the last two MOPAR 300s, leaving him with a series-leading four wins in this illustrious event. The Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger driver’s memories of last year’s race in Calgary are especially sweet, given that he came out on top of a lengthy side-by-side, late-race battle with his teammate Mark Dilley, en route to a ‘one-two’ finish for the longtime Whitlock Motorsports duo.
Another racer who has enjoyed a lot of success at Race City is two-time National champion Peter Gibbons, who has three career MOPAR 300 victories on his impressive resume, the last of which came in 2000. Additionally, the Canadian Tire Chevy driver has collected numerous checkered flags in the 100-lap qualifying sprint races over the years. These 50-mile chases are full Super Series points events, and can be counted on to produce thrilling action as the drivers fight to improve their standing in the championship chase, as well as their starting positions for the MOPAR 300.
The race marks the end of the first half of the Super Series schedule. Home Hardware Chevy driver Don Thomson Jr. leads the points chase entering the MOPAR 500 Weekend as he battles for his fifth-consecutive CASCAR National Championship. The Hamilton, ON racer has never won the MOPAR 300. Dodge Charger driver Mark Dilley is second in the points, 49 markers back of Thomson after five events. Micks has a pair of wins to his credit in 2005, including last weekend’s race at the Toronto Indy.
CASCAR NOTEBOOK: On Thursday afternoon, Calgary’s Eau Clair Market will once again host the Super 8 CASCAR Pit Stop Competition. The teams will gather at the Saddledome for 11 a.m., prior to heading downtown to the Eau Claire Market. For years, the Pit Stop Competition has signaled the start of Calgary’s annual visit by Canada’s elite stock car tour… Peter Gibbons and Kerry Micks won last year’s MOPAR 100 qualifying sprint races at Race City… Don Thomson Jr. won the pole for last year’s MOPAR 300 with a single-lap time of 17.510 seconds around Race City Speedway… Following the MOPAR 500 Weekend, the CASCAR Super Series teams will continue their tour through Western Canada when they head to Vernon, BC and Sun Valley Motor Speedway (July 29-30)… Like the Calgary Super Series race, the Sun Valley event will double as a CASCAR Western Series regular points race…
CASCAR ON TV: The ATTO 100 CASCAR race at the Toronto Indy airs on Saturday, July 23 at 2:30 p.m. EST on SPORTSNET. For information regarding initial airings and replays of Super Series races on SPORTSNET, please check your local listings or visit http://www.cascar.ca/schedule/tv_schedule.html.

POWER WATER SERIES: Cayuga Summary & Results
HAMILTON, ON – CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series veteran Steve Munro won Sunday afternoon’s 100-lap feature race at Cayuga 2000 Speedway. The event, which was originally scheduled for Saturday night at the 5/8-mile banked speedway, was moved to Sunday by inclement weather.
Munro, who hails from Carp, Ontario, started third in the 21-car field and took the lead from Dion Verhoeven just before the halfway point of the race. Verhoeven’s McRoberts Fuels Pontiac started on the pole and showed the way for the first 47 laps until giving way to Munro’s Chevy.
Verhoeven held on for second place at the finish, less than a quarter of a second behind Munro, whose only other PowerWater Series victory came on August 13, 2003 at his hometrack; Ottodrome Int’l Speedway, near Ottawa.
Finishing third on Sunday at Cayuga was multi-time Sportsman Series champ Steve Robblee, of Dorchester, ON. Ironically, the Grogan / McRobert Propane Ford Taurus driver also claimed the final podium position in Munro’s ’03 win at Ottodrome.
Sunday’s race at Cayuga was the third CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series race of the season. The next outing for the Sportsman Series takes place August 13 at Barrie Speedway. Barrie, ON racer Ron Lethbridge led all 100 laps of the July 2 PowerWater Series race at his hometrack.

SUPER SERIES: Toronto Indy Race Report
TORONTO, ON – CASCAR Super Series veteran Kerry Micks won Sunday afternoon’s ATTO 100 CASCAR Super Series race at the Molson Indy Toronto. The PowerWater Ford Taurus driver started 11th in the field for the 36-lap chase around the 11-turn temporary street circuit and passed race leader Don Thomson with seven laps to go en route to his first-ever Toronto Indy win.
Thomson’s Home Hardware Chevy led from lap 8 and stretched out an almost 10-second lead on the rest of the field, before the handling went away quickly on his car. At that point, Micks started to carve into Thomson’s lead and it became just a matter of time before the Mt. Albert, ON racer was in position to challenge Thomson for first place. That opportunity came at the end of the long Lakeshore Blvd. straightaway on lap 29 as Micks out-braked the reigning National champion on the entry to turn 3.
Once in front, Micks was able to build a solid lead of his own as Thomson continued to struggle. On the last lap, Peter Gibbons was able to slide his Canadian Tire Chevy inside of Thomson, as the pair entered turn 1, to grab second-place. Micks took the checkered flag 8.4-seconds ahead of Gibbons, while Thomson hung on for the final podium position.
“This was at the top of my list for races to win and I can’t believe we actually did it,” said Micks after the race. “The PowerWater Ford was strong all day and it didn’t go away. This was just our second race with this car. It’s the product of years of input and experience and we finally had it right on. I was backing off a little bit early but about mid-way, it looked like there wasn’t going to be a caution so I knew I had to get going after Donnie. Obviously, I caught him pretty fast because his car went away pretty severely.”
Polesitter DJ Kennington led the first seven laps of the ATTO 100, but pitted suddenly just prior to the race’s second restart when he felt a tire going down on his Castrol Dodge Charger, thereby handing the lead to Thomson. CASCAR’s seventh appearance at the Molson Indy Toronto was slowed by two full-course caution flags for a total of four laps.
With his third-place finish, Thomson retained the Super Series points lead after five events. Fourth-place Toronto finisher Mark Dilley (PowerWater / Dodge / Mobil 1 / Exide Charger) moved into second-place in the overall standings. Tara MacLeod (Central Merchant Svcs. Ford) is the top rookie in the points, in 16th-place. The Innisfil, ON racer came home 24th in her inaugural Toronto Indy outing.
The next CASCAR Super Series event is the MOPAR 500 Race Weekend at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park, on July 22-23.
POINT STANDINGS: After 5 events. Unofficial as of July 10, 2005: 1. #4 Don Thomson Jr. (806 pts.); 2. #9 Mark Dilley (757); 3. #02 Kerry Micks (741); 4. #1 Peter Gibbons (743); 5. #39 Dave Whitlock (693); 6. #23 Jeff Lapcevich (664); 7. #19 Brad Graham (662); 8. #84 J.R. SUPER SERIES: T.O. Indy Preview
LONDON, ON – This weekend, the CASCAR Super Series will make its seventh consecutive appearance as part of the Molson Indy Toronto race weekend. And for the first time ever, Canada’s top homegrown racing series will be part of the Sunday feature program at the temporary Exhibition Place street circuit.
All of CASCAR’s drivers and teams are looking forward to participating in the Toronto Indy; one of Canada’s top motorsports extravaganzas. But none is more keen to get the race underway than Jeff Lapcevich, who is looking to Sunday afternoon’s ATTO 100 Super Series race to provide an opportunity for redemption.
The Caistor Centre, ON racer won the 2003 and 2004 CASCAR Indy races on the streets of Toronto and was – until June 27 at Mosport Int’l Raceway – CASCAR’s unquestioned ‘king of the road racers’. But that changed when four-time National champ and current points leader Don Thomson (Home Hardware Chevy) edged Lapcevich en route to Mosport’s victory lane. The Fastline / Tim Hortons/ EMCEA Transport Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver is not taking the defeat lightly, to say the least.
“After being beaten at Mosport, we’ve been thinking about what we can do to prevent that from happening again,” said Lapcevich, as he prepared for the Toronto race. “We certainly haven’t taken that loss sitting down. We’re making considerable changes and we hope to pick up again right where we left off last year in Vancouver.”
In terms of specific changes his team has made in preparation for Toronto, Lapcevich doesn’t want to show his whole hand, but he said that his Fastline Motorsports team has acted to address some of the shortcomings that befell them at Mosport. “We worked on the horsepower because we were a little out-gunned at Mosport. We’re also doing some other things based on what we learned there. And I don’t think the big horsepower is as much of an advantage at the Toronto Indy as it is at Mosport. Toronto does have the big long straight, but it also has a lot more twisty sections, too. You need to be a little more graceful in Toronto and that suits our package a little better… I hope. Second is just no fun anymore.”
And if he needed any more incentive to do well in Toronto, Jeff Lapcevich is still smarting from last weekend’s Super Series race at Barrie where he led briefly before being caught up in an incident with a lapped car. “I was working pretty hard for an oval victory last weekend at Barrie, but it didn’t happen for us. That was a pretty big disappointment, so we’re looking to get that win back in Toronto.”
CASCAR has a half-hour practice session on Friday afternoon (starting at 4:45 p.m.), in advance Saturday’s lone qualifying session (6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.) to set the starting grid for the 36-lap, 100 km chase. The ATTO 100 CASCAR race is scheduled to take the green flag at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, following the ChampCar race.
CASCAR NOTEBOOK: Reigning CASCAR Western Series champ Kevin Dowler, driver of the EMCO Ford, swept both ends of the British Columbia doubleheader race weekend. On Saturday night, the Edmonton, AB racer won at Sun Valley Motor Speedway in Vernon. The next day, he completed the dream weekend by winning at Penticton Speedway (in Penticton, BC) after leading all but 14 laps of the 200-lap affair. Derek Polack came home in second place in both races… Three drivers are tied atop the leader board in terms of career CASCAR wins at the Molson Indy Toronto. Robin Buck, Kevin Dowler and Jeff Lapcevich each have two. Only Lapcevich is scheduled to compete in CASCAR’s seventh annual visit to the streets of Toronto.

BARRIE SPEEDWAY: Summary & Results
BARRIE, ON – CASCAR Super Series veteran Mark Dilley was once a part-owner of Barrie Speedway. His intimate knowledge of the newly re-configured speedway paid off on Sunday afternoon with a victory in the Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario.
Dilley’s Dodge / Mobil 1 / Power Water / Exide Dodge Charger started third in the 300-lap affair and led three times, including the final 50 tours of the high-banked, 1/3-mile tri-oval. Dilley, a resident of Barrie, ON, emerged relieved, exhausted and thrilled following the race.
The new racing surface, which was laid down just last fall, took a beating over the Canada Day Northern 500 Race Weekend. Intense heat and a doubleheader weekend featuring both the Super Series and the CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series resulted in portions of the track coming up during the Super Series feature event.
“Wow. That was like driving on ice,” said Dilley, after the win. “Every turn felt like driving down a dry road and then hitting six inches of slush right when you want to turn. That started about lap 30.” Race officials took the opportunity to clear the track of the asphalt debris during two red flag stoppages, but the relief from the tough handling conditions was only short-lived as the clutter quickly returned on each occasion. “Once I saw what was going on, my whole plan was to stick to the bottom of the track,” continued Dilley. “Call me a ‘bottom hugger’ if you want, but that’s what I had to do to bring that Dodge home in one piece.”
Finishing second to Dilley was another CASCAR veteran with a strong history at Barrie Speedway. Kerry Micks of Mt. Albert, ON started on the pole in his PowerWater Taurus and in spite of a strong effort to unseat Dilley from the top spot late in the race, was forced to settle for second.
Castrol Dodge Charger driver DJ Kennington came home third after charging forward from the 18th starting position in the 22-car field.
Super Series points leader and four-time National Champion Don Thomson led once for 58 laps but he also fell victim to the debris that slickened the outside groove, and dropped several positions after leaving the low-line on one occasion, en route to a fourth-place finish in his Home Hardware Chevy. Three-time National champ Dave Whitlock (Avenue Motor Works Dodge Charger / Wyoming, ON) rounded out the top-five finishers in the event that was slowed 12 times for a total of 83 caution laps.
The next CASCAR Super Series race takes place next weekend at the Molson Indy Toronto. Jeff Lapcevich of Caistor Centre, ON (Fastline / Tim Hortons / EMCEA Transport Chevy) is the defending winner of the CASCAR street circuit race on the grounds of Toronto’s Exhibition Place circuit.

POWERWATER SPORTSMAN SERIES: Barrie Summary & Results
BARRIE, ON – Ron Lethbridge of Barrie, ON thrilled his hometown fans on Saturday night at Barrie Speedway by winning the 100-lap CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series race. The Fuel Genie Dodge driver started on the outside of the front row and quickly moved to the head of the 23-car field.
Lethbridge, a rookie competitor on CASCAR’s Sportsman Series, passed polesitter Brad Graham on the first lap and led the way for the remainder of the race, which was slowed by four cautions for a total of 24 laps.
Defending PowerWater Series champ Graham (HB Material Handling Dodge) chased Lethbridge for the entire race distance, but the Glencoe, ON racer could not recover the top spot. The final podium position went to Dion Verhoeven of Kerwood, ON in his McRobert Fuels Pontiac.
The Canada Day Northern 500 Race Weekend at Barrie Speedway continues on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. with the Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario; the fourth race of the CASCAR Super Series season. Mt. Albert, ON racer Kerry Micks will start on the pole on Sunday afternoon in his PowerWater Ford, alongside of Super Series points leader Don Thomson Jr. in his Home Hardware Chevy.
