CASCAR WEST: Dowler wins title and race at Sun Valley
VERNON, BC – Kevin Dowler made history on Sunday afternoon in Vernon, British Columbia. The EMCO / Westlund / Western RV / Performance Friction Ford Taurus driver earned his record-extending fifth CASCAR Western Series crown when he started the Lordco Auto Parts 200 at Sun Valley Speedway. Originally scheduled for Saturday evening, the season finale was pushed back to Sunday afternoon by rain.
Not content with merely securing the title, the fiercely competitive racer charged from his fourth-place starting spot to take the lead prior to the midway point of the 200-lap race, en route to his unprecedented ninth Western Series victory of the season.
“I didn’t qualify as well as we practiced, so we lined up fourth for the race,” said Dowler. “Todd Nichol has been really strong lately and he had the pole for the second race in a row. Todd led the first 70 laps, at which point there was a caution and the top guys pitted.”
Dowler continued, “I stopped for a right-rear tire and my guys did an amazing job to get me out of the pits first. We led the rest of the way from there. Derek Polack was a threat late in the race, but he had enough to worry about holding off Jim White.”
The lengthy race weekend in Vernon got a little bit longer when the skies opened again with 15 laps to go, resulting in a two-hour delay.
“When we eventually got going again, I was leading Derek [Polack], Jim [White], Wade Lee and Todd Nichol. Going into turn 3 with one lap to go, Jim and Derek were battling hard for second and they got together and hit hard.”
When Dowler eventually took the checkered flag – ahead of Lee and Nichol – it put the finishing touches on a truly impressive 2005 season. Of the 10 points-paying races on the Western Series schedule, the Sherwood Park, AB racer collected five CASCAR Western Series checkered flags, as well as an outright win in his 100-lap qualifying sprint race at the National event at Race City Motorsport Park in late July.
Additionally, Dowler’s EMCO Taurus was the top-finishing Western regular in both of the 300-lap National / Western Series crossover events at Race City and Sun Valley Speedway, as well as in the 100-lap, full-points sprint race at Sun Valley during the Nat’l / Western Series stop. The Super Series races in Calgary and Vernon were full points events for the Western Series. Looking back at the season in its entirety, Dowler’s 11th-place finish in the season-opening race at Sun Valley, on May 22, was the lone blemish on an otherwise perfect campaign. After that rough start, he either won or was the top scoring Western Series racer in nine consecutive events.
Winning one championship takes a supreme effort. Earning five is a monumental achievement that requires the commitment and dedication of an army of crew members, sponsors and family members.
“It’s huge to comprehend that we’ve won five championships,” said Dowler of the achievement. “It hasn’t really set in yet, but it’s a big deal. We have a great team and great sponsors. And I really want to let everyone know that I have a great family that gives me the opportunity to do something I love, especially my wife Jackie.”
Even though the 2005 season is barely in the record books, Dowler is already looking ahead to next season when he will be gunning for a sixth Western Series championship.
“We’re running next year, but beyond that, it’s really up in the air. Everyone’s really optimistic about next season. [CASCAR President] Tony Novotny was at our banquet, after the race, and he said things with NASCAR are coming together well for next season.
“There’s a lot of interest in the series, especially when you consider there’s another series out this way that probably won’t be around next season, so it’s only logical for those guys to make the step to CASCAR. And that’s in addition to some other people who are also taking a good look at running with us. But that all hinges on a strong Western Series infrastructure being in place to help it grow.”

Cayuga: Gibbons makes another stunning late-race pass en route to his second consecutive CASCAR Super Series victory
The Crown Jewel 200 at the 5/8-mile Cayuga oval took place under the lights at the legendary speedway. Don Thomson Jr., CASCAR’s all-time top qualifier, started on the pole for a series-leading third time in 2005. His Home Hardware Chevy showed the way for the first 34 laps, before giving way to Gibbons’ Canadian Tire Chevy, in traffic.
Between them, the two prime combatants for the Super Series National championship led the majority of the laps at Cayuga, although Thomson was in control for most of the second-half of the 200-lap feature. At lap 133, with Thomson leading, Gibbons was mired in 12th-place and appeared to be going nowhere. A caution flag, 10 laps later, gave his crew the opportunity they desperately needed to improve the handling of the #1 Chevy.
By lap 167, Gibbons was up to fourth. He emerged in second-place after a lap 175 scuffle with Dave Whitlock (Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger) and Brad Graham (Challenger / Logel’s Dodge Charger), who were running second and third, respectively, at the time.
From there, Gibbons set about to whittling away at Thomson’s lead, which was approximately five seconds at the time. It appeared that Gibbons would run out of time and laps, however, as his lead deficit was still more than two seconds with five laps to go. But fortune smiled on Gibbons with three to go when Marc Miller (Carhartt Dodge) spun on the front straight, erasing Thomson’s lead and setting up a furious three-lap sprint to the checkered flag.
Thomson, fully aware that Gibbons had pounced to the inside of Whitlock during a late-race restart to win last weekend’s Great Canadian Race at Delaware, was determined to prevent that from happening at Cayuga. But Gibbons wouldn’t be denied. And despite Thomson’s best efforts to keep his Home Hardware Chevy glued to the bottom of the track for the final laps, Gibbons somehow managed to stick the nose of his Canadian Tire Chevy underneath Thomson’s car and powered to the lead on the backstretch on lap 198.
Gibbons’ win at Cayuga was his second in as many years at the largest oval on the CASCAR circuit. Thomson came home just over a second behind, while Whitlock claimed the final podium position. Jeff Lapcevich (Fastline / EMCEA Transport / Tim Hortons Chevrolet Monte Carlo) brought his car home in fourth to record his second top-four result in as many weeks. Brad Graham, who led briefly during the Crown Jewel 200, was fifth.
The 2005 CASCAR Super Series comes to a close next Sunday at Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, Ontario. Entering the race, Don Thomson has an 89-point lead over Gibbons in his quest for a record-extending fifth-consecutive National championship.
CAYUGA NOTES: Don Thomson Jr. won the pole at Cayuga with a lap of 21.102 seconds. DJ Kennington (Castrol Dodge) started second (21.231 seconds)… Pete Shepherd III, CASCAR’s top rookie in 2004, drove the #20 GE Lighting / L.E. Walker Chevy at Cayuga. The Brampton, ON racer will also drive for Mid-America Freight in next weekend’s CASCAR finale at Kawartha Speedway…

WESTERN SERIES: Dowler poised to win fifth championship on Saturday night
EDMONTON, AB – CASCAR Western Series veteran Kevin Dowler is poised to make history this Saturday night at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, British Columbia. The EMCO / Westlund / Western RV / Performance Friction Taurus driver is on the verge of earning his record-extending fifth Western Series championship.
The Sherwood Park, AB resident will enter the season finale with a virtually insurmountable 91-point advantage over his nearest rival, Derek Polack. Barring a massive turnout of racers for the event, Dowler will make things official when he takes the green flag to start the Lordco Auto Parts 200.
“Mathematically, our situation is pretty simple,” said Dowler. “We need to get the car qualified for the race. After that, unless there’s a monstrous turnout of cars, we will clinch the championship when the race begins.”
In spite of his commanding lead in the points, don’t think that Dowler will be content to just show up for the race. “We’re motivated to do well at Sun Valley, because we had such a bad time there during the Super Series National event in July. We want to show everyone that we can run well there. We’re preparing both of our oval cars to show up in winning form. We’ll decide during practice which car feels better and we’ll go with it for the race. We just love going to Sun Valley because it’s such a wonderful facility. They’re also having a big concert after the race, so it should be a good time.”
Although he’s not ready to start celebrating just yet, Dowler knows that his 2005 season has been a special one. “We’ve won eight of nine CASCAR Western Series points races so far this summer. We’ve had strong motors all year from AMS and my crew has been just awesome preparing our cars. It’s been a pleasure to drive the #35 EMCO Taurus this summer.”
Dowler also wants to recognize the participation of Sun Valley event sponsor Lordco Auto Parts. “Lordco stepped up to be the title sponsor of the Western Series closer and I want to thank them for that, on behalf of all the racers,” continued Dowler. “It demonstrates their commitment to the series’ racers and fans.”
The upcoming week will be a busy one for the Apollo Motorsports team. “Before we head to the racetrack, we’re taking the #35 EMCO Taurus to a bunch of EMCO locations,” noted Dowler. “There’s a golf tournament in Edmonton we’re displaying the car at, and then there’s a Customer Appreciation day in Camrose (AB). We’re also heading to Lethbridge and Red Deer. We’ve got lots of off-track things on the go to promote what we’re doing with the racing program, which is very important.”
Those interested in attending the Lordco Auto Parts 200 at Sun Valley Speedway should contact EMCO’s Debbie Luzia at (780) 454-4702 regarding tickets.

CASCAR Super Series veteran Peter Gibbons wins the APC 300 Great Canadian Race for the sixth time in his career
The Stouffville, ON racer repeated his winning performance of two years ago when he charged to victory from the 16th starting position. Gibbons fought brake troubles throughout Sunday’s race, but wouldn’t give up the hunt for the victory.
With a half-dozen laps remaining in the 300-lap feature race, Dave Whitlock led Brad Graham, with Gibbons in third. Graham’s superb run came to an end on lap 294 when the gas tank ran dry in his Challenger / Logel’s Dodge Charger, just three miles from the finish line.
That set up the final restart, on lap 295, with Whitlock’s Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger leading Gibbons’ Chevy. As the field came up to speed to take the green flag, Gibbons dove to the inside of Whitlock with a bold move. By the end of the lap, he had solidified his hold on the lead.
From there, chaos broke out as the front-runners scrambled for the win. At the start of lap 298, Gibbons led Castrol Dodge driver DJ Kennington, Whitlock, Don Thomson Jr. and Jeff Lapcevich. Whitlock fought back to second entering turn 1 and set his sights on Gibbons. But as the pack entered turn 3 on the last lap, Whitlock washed up high in the turn and lost several spots. He would cross the line in eighth.
The mad scramble continued as Kennington lost several positions, falling to sixth at the checkered flag. Super Series points leader Don Thomson brought his Home Hardware Chevy home in second-place, which was a spectacular result considering he slammed into an infield retaining wall, following contact with another driver, with just 50 laps to go. Jeff Lapcevich emerged with a third-place finish in his Fastline / EMCEA Transport / Tim Hortons Chevy. It was his second career podium result at Delaware.
“We had no brakes on the car about 100 laps into the race, and I thought ‘oh no’,” said Gibbons, in victory lane. “But we just kept the car going and put together a good run at the end. We tried to stay clean, but we got into a few guys because I couldn’t stop the car. I got a run on Dave [Whitlock] there on the restart and he tried to muscle me down, but I’m here to win. I don’t want to finish second so I held it right in there.”
NEXT RACE: The CASCAR Super Series returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 10) for a make-up event at Cayuga 2000 Speedway, located south of Hamilton, ON.

SUPER SERIES: Delaware Qualifying & Grid
LONDON, ON – On Saturday afternoon at Delaware Speedway, three-time CASCAR Super Series National champion Dave Whitlock posted the fastest time during qualifying for tomorrow’s APC 300 Great Canadian Race.
The achievement earned the Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger driver the pole position for Sunday afternoon’s 300-lap CASCAR Super Series feature event. Whitlock, who hails from nearby Wyoming, ON, lapped the half-mile oval in 19.421 seconds, which translated into a speed of 92.683 mph.
Four-time National champ Don Thomson Jr. was second-fastest, at 19.537 seconds. Thomson’s Home Hardware Chevy will start Sunday’s race on the outside of the front row. The Hamilton, ON racer is the current points leader following nine events and is gunning for an unprecedented fifth-consecutive Super Series National title.
A total of 32 drivers qualified for the APC 300 Great Canadian Race. Peter Gibbons, the five-time winner of the prestigious event, will start 16th on Sunday. Last year, the Canadian Tire Chevy driver started last before charging through the field to victory. Gibbons, who is currently second in the National points, will be hoping for a repeat of his 2003 performance in the Great Canadian Race, when he also started 16th before collecting his fourth win in the legendary event.
Delaware Speedway’s spectator gates will open on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. The Super Series driver autograph session and several other pre-race festivities will set the stage for the start of the APC 300 at 2 p.m.
