SPORTSMAN SERIES: Kawartha

McGlynn’s third consecutive CASCAR Sportsman Series victory earns him his first points championship

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Shawn McGlynn continued his late-season domination of the CASCAR Sportsman Series with a victory, on Saturday night, in the 100-lap season finale at Kawartha Speedway. The result thrust the Kitchener, ON racer to the top of the point standings following the fifth and final race on the 2006 schedule.

“We had an awesome season and we couldn’t have hoped for more,” said McGlynn, who won the final three races of the season en route to the title. “We came here two points out of the lead and we knew we had to get the pole, lead the most laps and finish ahead of Dion Verhoeven by one position, so we weren’t holding anything back. We worked hard and came out on top.”

McGlynn’s Ford Taurus started on the pole, but it was 2005 series champion Verhoeven (McRoberts Fuels Pontiac) who jumped to the early lead from his starting position, immediately to McGlynn’s right. Verhoeven, from Kerwood, ON, showed the way for the first 13 laps, but gave way to Steve Munro (Mattel Hot Wheels Chevy) at that point. Munro, who hails from Carp, ON led until lap 34.

McGlynn was aware of the fact that in order to earn the championship, he would have to take the lead prior to lap 50 and lead the rest of the way to the checkered flag (thereby scoring ‘most laps led’ bonus points). And that’s exactly what he did, driving by Munro and into the lead, on lap 35, in what would be the race’s final lead change.

At the checkered flag, McGlynn came home 1.3-seconds ahead of Munro, with Verhoeven close behind. In the final point standings, McGlynn (407 pts.) denied Verhoeven (404) his second-consecutive Sportsman Series title by just three markers.

UNOFFICIAL FINAL POINT STANDINGS (Top 12 after 5 events, as of September 16, 2006): 1. #81 Shawn McGlynn (407 pts.); 2. #77 Dion Verhoeven (404); 3. #00 Steve Munro (382); 4. #32 Mike Alguire (370); 5. #11 Cole Weber (358); 6. #95 Ron Lethbridge (354); 7. #82 Dave Connelly (340); 8. #48 Doug Cathcart (333); 9. #67 Scott Mitchell (327); 9. #36 Alan Lebert (327); 11. #66 Josh Wood (273); 12. #20 Dave Didero (268)

CASCAR: Kawartha results

Dilley and Fitzpatrick are the big winners in the Dodge Charger 250 CASCAR Super Series finale at Kawartha Speedway

PETERBOROUGH, ON – The 2006 CASCAR Super Series season came to a close on Sunday afternoon at Kawartha Speedway. Dodge-sponsored Charger driver Mark Dilley won the ‘Dodge Dealers of Ontario Dodge Charger 250 presented by MOPAR’ at the 3/8-mile, Peterborough-area stock car oval. It was the first feature win of the season for the Barrie, ON resident, making him the ninth different winner in 11 races.

“Everything hit on eight cylinders today,” said Dilley, after the race. “We pitted early and found that the right-rear tire was blistering a bit. It was a great call by my crew to bring me in at that point to make the change and fix our loose condition. After that, the car would really ‘come on’ about 15 laps into the runs. It’s a great honour to win for Dodge today in this great race.”

Sharing the spotlight with Dilley was 18-year-old J.R. Fitzpatrick, who earned his first CASCAR Super Series points championship by completing the 11-event series 45 points ahead of Don Thomson Jr.; his Fitzpatrick Motorsports teammate. Thomson (Home Hardware Chevy) won five consecutive CASCAR National championships between 2001 and 2005.

“The goal today was to win the title, and stay out of trouble,” said the young champion. “We’re going to take this, enjoy it, and start thinking about winning another one. At the start of the season, I set a goal for a top-five points finish. We exceeded everything we wanted to achieve, by far.”

Fitzpatrick, driver of the Milwaukee Tools Chevy, avoided trouble for most of the 250-lap race but was involved in a mild scrape in the late-going, triggered by two other drivers. The Ayr, ON youngster soldiered home for a ninth-place result, which was more than sufficient to secure the prestigious points championship.

Finishing second to Dilley in Sunday’s Dodge Charger 250 was Don Thomson Jr., who overcame a blown motor during qualifying which relegated him to the tail-end of the 25-car field for the start of the feature race. The Hamilton, ON resident earned the ‘Fast Eddie Hard Charger’ award by advancing 23 positions.

Castrol Dodge Charger driver DJ Kennington claimed the final podium spot at Kawartha. The St. Thomas, ON racer started on the pole and led the first 100 laps, but used up his tires after pitting early, and could do little to challenge Dilley and Thomson at the end. Fourth-place went to Scott Steckly (ERB Dodge), ahead of Kawartha track promoter Derek Lynch (Canadian Shield Dodge).

Jason Hathaway (Snap On Dodge) wrapped up his inaugural Super Series season with a sixth-place showing. The Appin, ON racer earned the Rookie of the Year Award driving for the #3 Ed Hakonson Racing (EHR) team. Things came together for Hathaway late in the season with several strong runs. His final three races produced three top-six finishes, en route to 11th overall in the Super Series points. Dilley’s victory in the Dodge Charger 250 secured a second-consecutive CASCAR Manufacturers’ Trophy for DaimlerChrysler / Dodge / MOPAR.

UNOFFICIAL POINTS: CASCAR SUPER SERIES (Top 15 // After 12 events, as of September 17, 2006): 1. #84 J.R. CASCAR Super Series to become the "NASCAR Canadian Tire Series"

TORONTO, ON (September 12, 2006) - In support of its initiatives across Canada, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) today announced the creation of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Scheduled to launch in May 2007, the series includes a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Canadian Tire - an iconic Canadian brand with strong national presence.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will operate nationally in Canada with a schedule of 10-12 races (May-October). The series will provide new racing opportunities for teams and drivers from the former CASCAR series. The official NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule, point fund and tracks will be announced at a later date.

The series will receive support from NASCAR's extensive resources, including competition, research and development, marketing, licensing and communications. A dedicated staff will operate the series, with NASCAR Canada providing additional support in sponsorship, licensing, marketing and media initiatives.

"NASCAR racing is a popular, growing sport in Canada, enjoyed by millions of passionate fans," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR Vice-President of Racing Operations. "The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will help attract new Canadian fans and competitors and bring the excitement of NASCAR racing to new fans in Canada. We also recognize the tremendous history and heritage of CASCAR and welcome its fans and competitors into this exciting new series."

NASCAR has a strong fan base in Canada with 5.8 million fans, representing one out of four Canadian adults. The average Canadian NASCAR fan has been following the sport for approximately 10 years. The Canadian NASCAR fan base is truly national with fans from all across the country: British Columbia - 12%, Alberta - 11%, Manitoba/Saskatchewan - 6%, Ontario - 39%, Quebec - 24%, Atlantic Canada (made up of all Atlantic provinces) - 8%.*

In addition to becoming title sponsor of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Canadian Tire, the most-shopped general merchandiser in the country, will become the official automotive retailer of NASCAR in Canada. Canadian Tire will offer exclusive customer promotions, seasonal marketing programs and national advertising and in-store programs in partnership with NASCAR Canada. As part of the partnership agreement and its continued focus on being first-to-market with new and exciting products, Canadian Tire will explore licensing opportunities, including developing a new line of NASCAR products for the automotive aftermarket.

"NASCAR and Canadian Tire share a passion for motorsports and automotive products," said Todd Sharman, Vice-President, Automotive, Canadian Tire Retail. "We are excited that through this partnership we are able to bring the NASCAR racing experience to Canadian fans and look forward to creating an exciting, new lineup of NASCAR branded products."

"NASCAR Canada is pleased to welcome Canadian Tire to NASCAR as its officially designated automotive retailer in Canada. It's a natural fit, as our fan base is Canadian Tire's customer," said Randy Paul, Managing Director of NASCAR Canada. "NASCAR fans will benefit from this association with Canadian Tire, whether it's watching NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races on TSN, attending the new racing series, purchasing licensed products in-store, or participating in NASCAR-themed events at dealers across Canada."

TSN, a NASCAR broadcast partner for more than 20 years, will help market the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and draw new fans to NASCAR and stock car racing in Canada. Among these efforts, TSN is developing a monthly magazine-style show that will showcase the many aspects of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. The program will spotlight the stars of the series, race news, updates and highlights.

NASCAR is the No. 1 televised motorsport in Canada. The 2006 Daytona 500 was the most-watched motorsport race in TSN history with a national average audience of 568,000 viewers.**

DILLEY: Dodge-sponsored racer 3rd at St-Eustache

Dodge-sponsored Charger driver records another third-place finish

BARRIE, ON – On Saturday night, at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache, Mark Dilley continued his strong, late-season charge with another superb run. Dilley guided his #9 Dodge / Mobil1 / Exide / Leland / Avenue MotorWorks / CRS Dodge Charger to its second-consecutive third-place CASCAR Super Series finish.

The Barrie, ON driver started sixth in the 200-lap race around the flat, 4/10-mile oval and moved into fourth just prior to the halfway point of the race. With 80 laps remaining, a shuffle of the lead pack cars raised Dilley’s Dodge Charger to third, where he would eventually finish.

The result came less than a week after the team earned a third-place result at Cayuga Int’l Speedway. Following the race at St-Eustache, Dilley was excited about his race, as well as his late-season surge.

“The car was great, and the #9 Dodge crew did an excellent job. Our car was very fast, but it’s difficult to pass here. It’s hard sometimes to have a car that’s a lot stronger than the guys you’re chasing. Because even though you’re able to carry a lot more speed into the turns than they can, catching and passing are different things and you really have to get on the brakes sometimes to avoid running into the back of them.

“At the end, I had a shot at DJ [Kennington], who was second, I worked him over a bit, but I wasn’t going to turn him around. I can’t complain about a third at a tough track like this. We’re proud to be on the podium, two races in a row. We’re making a bit of a late-season charge, so I’m happy.”

Adding to Dilley’s pleasure at St-Eustache was the fact that he was – for the second race in a row – part of an all-Dodge Charger sweep of the top three finishing positions. MOPAR-powered racers Ron Beauchamp Jr. and DJ Kennington were first and second, respectively.

Commenting on the Dodge display, Dilley continued, “I’m really proud of, and happy for, all of the DaimlerChrysler, Dodge and MOPAR people associated with this program. To have an all-Dodge Charger podium two races in a row is really an accomplishment.”

This weekend, the CASCAR Super Series wraps up its 2006 season with the ‘Dodge Charger 250 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario’ at Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, Ontario.

Regarding the season finale, Dilley said, “We’re on a roll and it would be great to finish the season with another podium and maybe a win. I’m really looking forward to finishing the season on a high note.”

ST-EUSTACHE RACE NOTES: MOPAR Dodge Charger driver Ron Beauchamp Jr. won his fifth career CASCAR Super Series feature race on Saturday night at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache. The Windsor, ON racer took the lead on lap 66 and was able to power away from the field during long runs, en route to the checkered flag.
Second-place went to Dodge driver DJ Kennington, who has performed well at St-Eustache throughout his racing career. Dodge-sponsored Charger driver Mark Dilley completed the second ‘all-Dodge’ podium sweep for the second race in a row.
Super Series points leader JR Fitzpatrick finished fourth and tightened his grasp on the championship heading to the 11th and final points event of the season, this weekend at Kawartha Speedway. The Sept. 16-17 ‘Dodge Charger 250 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario’ is part of a two-day racing program.

CASCAR CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT… SPACES AVAILABLE: There are still places available for foursomes and individuals to participate in the 7th Annual Racing With James Turner Charity Golf Tournament, which takes place Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the National Pines Golf & Country Club, in Barrie, ON. For anyone who has ever participated in the event, it’s a great time, for excellent causes (Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion Foundation & the Canadian Diabetes Association). For more information on getting involved, call Mark Dilley directly at (705) 733-8849.

CASCAR: St. Eustache

MONTREAL, QC – On Saturday night at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache, Ron Beauchamp Jr. won his fifth career CASCAR Super Series race following a dominant performance in the 200-lap feature race around the flat, 4/10-mile oval.

Beauchamp started fourth in the 17-car Super Series field and guided his MOPAR Dodge Charger into the lead on lap 66 when he passed polesitter Kerry Micks, who had led from the initial green flag. From there, the Windsor, ON racer was able to pull away from the pack on long runs.

With two laps to go, the race’s seventh and final caution flag came out, setting up a two-lap dash for the win. Beauchamp was able to defend his position and came home a quarter of a second ahead of runner-up DJ Kennington (Castrol Dodge).

“It feels awesome,” said Beauchamp, in victory lane. “We thought the MOPAR Dodge was pretty good when we unloaded it. And by the time we were into the race, I knew we had a good car. After I got out front, I just tried to ‘baby’ my tires and brakes so we could make it the whole race, and we made it. We didn’t even have to make a pit stop. The longer the green flag runs, the better the car got.”

For the second race in a row, Mark Dilley (Dodge-sponsored Charger) took the checkered flag in third place. The St-Eustache 200 was the second consecutive race to produce an ‘all-Dodge Charger’ podium.
Super Series points leader J.R. Fitzpatrick enhanced his championship hopes at St-Eustache with a fourth-place effort in his Milwaukee Tools Chevy. The 18-year-old finished better than his two closest points rivals to increase his lead with just one race remaining on the 2006 Super Series schedule. Kerry Micks was ninth, while Dave Whitlock did not finish and was scored 15th in the final results.

Open-wheel racing star Andrew Ranger got his first taste of asphalt stock car racing on Saturday night, behind the wheel of Dave Jacombs’ Lou’s / CPS Ford. The Granby, QC racer started 15th and came home 13th, finishing all but two laps in his impressive CASCAR debut.

Other notable finishers included Peter Gibbons, in fifth, in his Canadian Tire Chevy. Super Series rookie standout Jason Hathaway backed up his fifth-place showing last weekend at Cayuga Int’l Speedway with a sixth-place result in the St-Eustache 200.

The CASCAR Super Series season wraps up next weekend at Kawartha Speedway.

Dilley third at Cayuga

BARRIE, ON – At the start of the final lap of Sunday night’s CASCAR Super Series race at Cayuga Int’l Speedway, it looked like Mark Dilley was about to bring his #9 Dodge / Mobil1 / Exide / Leland / Avenue MotorWorks / CRS Dodge Charger home with a respectable fifth-place finish.

But in racing, it’s not over until it’s over. Last lap chaos involving the third and fourth-placed drivers boosted Dilley to third at the checkered flag, locking in an ‘all-Dodge podium’ featuring race-winner Dave Whitlock, runner-up Ron Beauchamp Jr. and Dodge-sponsored Charger driver Mark Dilley.

It was a pleasantly surprising turn of events for Dilley, who thought he might have cost his team a shot at a top finish, on lap 65 of the 200-lap race, when he felt he had a tire going down. The Goodyear slick turned out to be fine, but the trip to the pits to check it out sent Dilley to the back of the lead lap cars. From there, the Barrie, ON racer fought his way back through the pack to put himself into position to benefit from the last-lap shuffle.

“I just gave it all she had,” said Dilley, after the race. “I made a bad call, thinking that I had a flat tire when I didn’t. But we fought back as hard as we could after that. The other guys [Don Thomson & Brad Graham] tangled in turn 3 and I’m glad we made it through the mess because I had the pedal down, going for the opening. It was a great result to see my Whitlock Motorsports teammate Dave Whitlock win the race and for us to be on the podium with him, in third.”

Dilley continued, “It was a great night for our sponsors, especially Dodge to have three Chargers finish on the podium in a big race like the ‘Hot Head Henry 200 Powered by Griddly Headz’ here at Cayuga Speedway.”

Prior to the start of the feature race, on Sunday night at Cayuga, the entire time trial and sprint race portion of the program took place on Sunday afternoon, after heavy rain washed away the Saturday schedule.

Mark Dilley posted the seventh-fastest time during the 27-car time trial session, lapping the 5/8-mile Cayuga oval in 21.430 seconds. In his 50-lap qualifying sprint race, soon after, the Dodge-sponsored Charger driver came across the line in third-place.

On the strength of his third-place feature points and his third-place showing in the ‘half-points’ sprint race, Dilley heads to this weekend’s CASCAR Super Series race at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache in sixth-place in the overall points chase.

Looking ahead to Montreal, Dilley said, “We’ve had some good runs of late, so we’re looking forward to St-Eustache. We’ve been fast there at times in the past, and although it’s not my favourite place in terms of our results, I know we’re capable of doing well there. We’re in the hunt, and that pumps you up.”

CAYUGA RACE NOTES: Mark Dilley’s Whitlock Motorsports teammate Dave Whitlock (NTN Bower / Griddly Headz Dodge Charger) won his second CASCAR Super Series race in a month when he took the checkered flag in Sunday night’s Hot Head Henry 200 at Cayuga Int’l Speedway.
Whitlock led a podium sweep by the Dodge Charger contingent, leading Ron Beauchamp Jr. (MOPAR Dodge Charger) and Mark Dilley (Dodge-sponsored Charger) across the start/finish line to end the 200-lap feature race.
Canadian open-wheel racing start Patrick Carpentier made his stock car debut at Cayuga, coming home with a respectable sixth-place result.

CASCAR SPORTSMAN: McGlynn wins at Cayuga

HAMILTON, ON – Shawn McGlynn put on a dominant performance in Sunday’s Texaco-Havoline 100 CASCAR Sportsman Series race at Cayuga Int’l Speedway.

The Kitchener, ON racer started on the pole for the 100-lap race around the 5/8-mile speedway and led every lap. At the checkered flag, the Ford driver finished almost five seconds ahead of reigning series champ Dion Verhoeven (McRoberts Fuels Pontiac) and Steve Munro (Hot Wheels Chevy).

The victory was the third of McGlynn’s career and second in a row. In the last two races combined, the veteran racer has led 199 of a possible 200 feature laps.

Three-time CASCAR National champion Dave Whitlock, who would go on to win the Hot Head Henry 200 Powered by Griddly Headz CASCAR Super Series race later in the evening, started second in the field of 17. The Wyoming, ON driver set the fastest lap of the race and was running a close second to McGlynn when his engine expired just seven laps into the Texaco-Havoline 100.

Following four CASCAR Sportsman Series races, Dion Verhoeven leads the points by two markers over Shawn McGlynn (326 to 324). The fifth and final CASCAR Sportsman Series race of the 2006 season takes place in two weeks at Kawartha Speedway.

CASCAR Cayuga

HAMILTON, ON, ON – Less than month after making his first trip to victory lane in almost two years, Dave Whitlock repeated the feat with a win in Sunday night’s ‘Hot Head Henry 200 Powered by Griddly Headz’ CASCAR Super Series race at Cayuga Int’l Speedway.

Whitlock’s NTN Bower / Griddly Headz / NMT Dodge Charger lined up fifth in the field of 27 starters for the event and powered past race leader and eventual runner-up finisher Ron Beauchamp Jr. (MOPAR Dodge Charger) on lap 143 of the 200-lap chase around the 5/8-mile speedway, located south of Hamilton, ON. Over the remainder of the race, Beauchamp fought to regain the position, but he wasn’t able to recover the lead from the three-time CASCAR National champ.

“Ronnie [Beauchamp] got a little bit wide going around a lapped car and I nosed it in there,” said Whitlock, in victory lane. “I took the hole and made a clean pass. I wasn’t going to wait two years before winning again. Ron was driving for all he was worth after I got past him, but we managed to stay ahead.”

Finishing third at Cayuga was Dodge-sponsored Charger driver Mark Dilley, of Barrie, ON. The top-three finishers delivered a podium sweep for Dodge. Dilley was running fifth on the final lap when Brad Graham (Challenger / Logel’s Dodge) and Don Thomson Jr. (Home Hardware Chevy), who were in third and fourth, respectively, at the time, came together in turn 3 with disastrous results for both. Graham ended up seventh, while Thomson was scored in 12th, the last car on the lead lap.

Peter Gibbons (Canadian Tire Chevy) was scored fourth at the end of the Hot Head Henry 200. The Stouffville, ON racer earned the pole position for the race by posting the fastest time during time trials earlier in the afternoon. He also won his 50-lap Sprint race and showed the way for the first 103 laps of the feature race, in spite of fighting a loose condition with his car throughout the first half.

CASCAR’s top rookie in 2006, Jason Hathaway (Snap On Dodge Charger) finished fifth, ahead of Canadian road racing star Patrick Carpentier (#88 Cayugaracing.com / Lou’s BBQ Ford), who climbed from 21st on the starting grid to take an impressive sixth in his first-ever stock car race.

Points leader J.R. Fitzpatrick (Milwaukee Tools Chevy) was eighth at Cayuga. The bright spot of his day came during his 50-lap sprint race when he took the checkered flag. The young Ayr, ON racer holds a 44-point lead over Kerry Micks (Berkshire Ford) heading to next weekend’s CASCAR Super Series race at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache. The race was postponed by rain earlier in the season.
