Robblee wins PowerWater season opener at Mosport Speedway
OSHAWA, ON – On Saturday night at Mosport Speedway, Steve Robblee proved that a one-year hiatus from the CASCAR PowerWater Series didn’t negatively impact his ability to win races. The multi-time Sportsman Series champ started fourth in the June 18 season-opener at the half-mile oval and took the lead halfway through the 100-lap affair, en route to victory lane.
Dion Verhoeven started on the inside of the front row and led laps 3 through 49 until he tangled with lapped traffic, thereby turning the top spot over to Robblee, who hails from Dorchester, ON.
Leading up to the checkered flag, London’s Mike Alguire was on Robblee’s tail, in front of Carp, ON racer Steve Munro. Although he said his car was tough to handle, Robblee survived the onslaught. Alguire and Munro claimed the final podium positions.
“It’s all I could do to hold onto the car,” said Robblee. “It was a handful on those last two restarts. We didn’t have our A-1 car tonight, but we did have a lot of luck.” The CARQUEST 100 was slowed by five cautions for a total of 34 laps.
Defending series champion Brad Graham posted the fastest time during qualifying, but that effort was thrown out after his car was deemed to be too low during post-time-trial tech inspection. The Glencoe, ON racer started at the back of the 22-car pack and charged forward until spinning late to bring out the final caution. The Dodge driver still recovered to take fourth-place in the season opener.
