Micks wins Whelen 200 CASCAR Super Series race at Montreal’s Autodrome St-Eustache
MONTREAL, QC – Kerry Micks took the lead on lap 118 of Saturday night’s Whelen 200 CASCAR Super Series race at Autodrome St-Eustache and showed the way until taking the checkered flag at the conclusion of the 200-lap event at the Montreal-area oval.
Micks, who hails from Mt. Albert, ON, lined up fifth in the 25-car field and quickly started to move toward the front of the field. By lap 35, the Power Water Taurus driver was running in third-place behind Dave Whitlock and Don Thomson Jr.
Halfway through the race, Micks was all over Whitlock’s Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge; he made the winning pass a few minutes later as the pair exited turn 4.
As the laps wound down, it appeared that Micks, Thomson (Home Hardware Chevy) and Whitlock would take the top three positions. But it wasn’t to be. Whitlock was involved in a spin on lap 183 and after losing a lap due to a ‘stop & go’ penalty, the Wyoming, ON racer made contact with Thomson in the closing laps, which knocked the four-time and reigning National champion off his stride and into a fourth-place finish.
The late-race battle between Whitlock and Thomson opened the door for 2003 St-Eustache Super Series race winner DJ Kennington (Castrol Dodge) and Delaware season-opener winner Ron Beauchamp Jr. (MOPAR / Exide / Mobil 1 Dodge Charger) to take second and third, respectively.
Following two races, Beauchamp leads the National points chase. Thomson, who led briefly in the early laps of the Whelen 200, is second after two events, ahead of Whitlock.
Canadian Tire Chevy driver Peter Gibbons sat on the pole for the Whelen 200, after circling the 4/10-mile flat oval in 17.767 seconds. The performance ended Gibbons’ pole-qualifying drought, which went back to June 29, 2003 at Cayuga Speedway.
