DELAWARE: Preview

The CASCAR Super Series heads to Delaware Speedway for the APC 300 Great Canadian Race Weekend

LONDON, ON – This weekend, the CASCAR Super Series returns to Delaware Speedway for one of the biggest events on the annual Canadian stock car calendar. Sunday afternoon’s APC 300 is the centerpiece of the ‘Great Canadian Race Weekend’, a racing tradition that goes back more than two decades.

The list of past winners of the event reads like a ‘who’s who’ of Canadian stock car racing. Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame inductee and former Super Series racer Earl Ross won the inaugural Labour Day 300-lap event at the London-area, half-mile oval back in 1982. Tracy Leslie has three APC 300 wins to his credit, while Sean Dupuis, Dan Shirtliff and Steve Robblee have won it twice. Wayne Keeling, Alex Nagy, Brad Jacques, Al Turner, Kerry Micks and several others have also tasted victory in this prestigious event.

But in recent years, the ‘Great Canadian Race’ has been dominated by one man. Peter Gibbons stands above the crowd with five career victories, including memorable wins in the last two APC 300s. Last year’s victory by the Canadian Tire Chevy driver surprised everyone, including Gibbons.

Relegated to the back of the 35-car field for the start of the race by a ride-height infraction after time trials, the usually up-beat Gibbons was dejected during the pre-race autograph session. But what followed was nothing short of incredible. The Stouffville, ON racer put on an astounding ‘back-to-front’ charge that added to the legend of the APC 300. The performance overshadowed Gibbons’ achievement in the 2003 edition of the APC 300 when he won from the 16th starting position.

But all of that is in the past. Gibbons will have to have a similar result in this Sunday’s feature race if he plans to have a chance at winning his third career CASCAR Super Series National championship. Heading into the weekend, Home Hardware Chevy driver Don Thomson has amassed a comfortable 91-point lead over Gibbons in the overall standings. Thomson is focused on earning his fifth straight National title.

Lurking in third-place in the points, after nine of 12 events, is Castrol Dodge driver DJ Kennington of nearby St. Thomas, Ontario. Kennington has been on a tear in the second-half of the Super Series season and has thrown himself into the heat of the points chase after a tough start to the campaign.

The Great Canadian Race Weekend is a three-day stock car extravaganza. On Friday evening, Delaware Speedway will host ‘Triple 50s’ for its regular Late Model division as well as its Truck class and the popular ‘King of the Hill’ spectator races. Saturday’s program will feature time trials by the Super Series teams that will set the grid for Sunday’s APC 300. The Modified and Street Stock classes will also be in action on Saturday night.

After that, it will be time for the main event. Delaware will open its gates on 11 a.m. on Sunday morning. The Super Series driver autograph session and several other pre-race festivities will set the stage for the start of the APC 300 at 2 p.m.

DELAWARE NOTES: Don Thomson sat on the pole for last year’s APC 300 after lapping the Delaware half-mile oval in 19.470 seconds… Ron Beauchamp won the MOPAR 250 at Delaware on the May long weekend…

CASCAR ON TV: Watch a CASCAR double-header on SPORTSNET this weekend. The network is airing both the Mosport Speedway 200 and the Logel's AutoParts 200 from Peterborough Speedway. TORONTO, ON – James Robinson Associates Ltd., the producers of the CASCAR television programs, recently came to terms with the U.S. television channel MavTV to broadcast CASCAR Super Series stock car races from years passed.

JRA Ltd. has been producing CASCAR’s race broadcasts for over a decade and the agreement with MavTV will see the network televise CASCAR events from 1994 to the present.

MavTV is a 24-hour digital cable network, targeting adult males with a daring mix of irreverent programming that’s not seen on any other television network.

The network was launched in October 2004.

CASCAR is Canada’s top motorsport sanctioning body. The Super Series is a 12-event professional stock car tour that holds events across Canada.

CASCAR Super Series races are presently broadcast within weeks of taking place on SPORTSNET and on consecutive weekends, in the fall/winter, on SPEED Channel.

While currently unavailable outside of the U.S., MavTV has plans for international distribution.

CASCAR WEST: Dowler guides the EMCO Taurus to victory lane at Edmonton Int’l Raceway

EDMONTON, AB – On Saturday night at Edmonton Int’l Raceway, four-time CASCAR Western Series champion Kevin Dowler virtually secured his record-extending fifth series title with a win in the next-to-last race of the 2005 season.

Dowler’s EMCO / Westlund / Western RV / Performance Friction Taurus qualified second-fastest for the Competition Chevrolet 200 at the Wetaskiwin, AB oval, but it didn’t take long for him to make his way to the front.

“It was a good race for us,” said Dowler, after the event. “We were quick in both practice sessions. I qualified for the race with exactly the same time we posted in practice. Todd Nichol really picked it up for time trials, though, and he put his car on the pole, which was good for him.”

After running second to Nichol for the first quarter of the 200-lap race, Dowler made his move. “We ducked underneath him [Nichol] coming out of turn 2 and set sail,” continued Dowler, who comfortably led for the next 80 laps, at which point the front-runners pitted.

“We stopped for a new right-rear tire and my crew did an awesome job. You could tell the pit stops we did during the National events [in late July] really paid off because the guys were right on their game and got me out of the pits first. I was done and gone while the others were still thinking about changing tires.”

From there, the #35 EMCO Taurus showed the way to the checkered flag. Calgarian Wade Lee finished second, ahead of Derek Polack of Stony Plain. Nichol experience some trouble late in the race and fell to fourth place at the end.

The victory meant a lot to Dowler for several reasons. “Winning in front of my hometown fans was a big deal. And it was a great night for the family because my cousin Terry Dowler won the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race. I was really happy to win for EMCO because they had over 200 staff, friends, family and customers at the race, which made the event very special.”

Heading to the season finale on Sept. 10 at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, BC, Dowler has laid the groundwork for his fifth Western Series crown. “I pretty much just have to start the last race at Sun Valley to secure my fifth CASCAR Western Series championship, which I’m really proud of. We’re going there with a 91-point lead, but we’d really like to win the season finale and finish the season off right.”

SUPER SERIES: Peterborough Summary & Results

Beauchamp wins at Peterborough Speedway to earn his second CASCAR Super Series victory of 2005

PETERBOROUGH, ON – CASCAR Super Series veteran Ron Beauchamp won Sunday afternoon’s Logel’s Auto Parts 200 at Peterborough Speedway. The victory by the MOPAR Parts / Exide / Mobil 1 Dodge Charger driver was his second of the season and the fourth of his Super Series career.

Beauchamp started third in the 23-car field and took the lead on lap 114 of the 200-lap race when polesitter Kerry Micks pitted, along with most of the other front-runners. Beauchamp’s tires held up well through the rest of the race and he was able to build a three-second lead over Micks’ hard-charging PowerWater Taurus by lap 197.

That lead was erased, however, by the race’s sixth and final caution, with two laps to go. The final restart saw Beauchamp and Micks pull away from the field when the Challenger / Logel’s Dodge Charger of Brad Graham failed to come up to speed due to a flat tire. The Glencoe, ON racer was third at the time.

After Beauchamp and Micks took the white flag signaling the start of the final lap around the one-third-mile, high-banked oval, Micks got into the back of the MOPAR Dodge, sending him high into turn 2. Micks displayed great sportsmanship and allowed Beauchamp to get straightened out before resuming the battle for the win. Micks challenged the leader on the high-side as they entered turn 3, and on the low-side coming off turn 4. Both moves were ultimately unsuccessful and Beauchamp won by less than two-tenths of a second.

“The car was awesome from the get-go,” said Beauchamp in victory lane. “I had a big lead before we got that late caution and I thought, ‘I didn’t need that.’ And then I saw who was behind me and I knew I was going to have to work for the win. He got me sideways but he backed off and gave me a chance to get it corrected and we went from there.”

Micks was understandably proud of the result and made it clear that his intention wasn’t to spin Beauchamp on the last lap. “We wanted to give him a chance to straighten his car out because we don’t want to make a pass like that. I’ve been there too many times and I don’t race that way and I respect it back when the guys do it to me. I was just happy to get a second for the PowerWater team.”

Three-time National champion Dave Whitlock inherited third-place when Graham was slowed by the flat tire. Ironically, Whitlock also has a tire going down on his Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger, but it held up until the car came to a stop for the podium celebration.

Points leader Don Thomson Jr. finished sixth in his Home Hardware Chevy, one spot ahead of Canadian Tire Chevy driver Peter Gibbons, his nearest rival for the National championship. Neither driver was in contention for the win at Peterborough. Castrol Dodge driver DJ Kennington started the Logel’s 200 in 10th place. His fourth-place finish ended his quest for a record-setting fourth-consecutive Super Series feature win.

The next CASCAR Super Series event takes place on the September 3-4 Labour Day weekend at Delaware Speedway, near London, Ontario.

SUPER SERIES: Rain again at Peterborough

The rain started falling again at Peterborough just prior to the driver autograph sessions.
It's 2:04 and it's still sprinkling, although reports are that it should clear soon.

POWER WATER SERIES: Peterborough Results & Summary

Shawn McGlynn makes his first trip to CASCAR’s victory lane in Sunday’s PowerWater Series race at Peterborough Speedway

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Sunday was a day of firsts for CASCAR PowerWater Series racer Shawn McGlynn. The Kitchener, ON resident won his first-ever CASCAR race when he took the victory in the Parkhill Excavating 100 at Peterborough Speedway.

And although he only led the final four laps of the 100-lap affair, they were the first feature race laps the McGlynn Ford Taurus driver has ever led in CASCAR action.

Reigning PowerWater Series champion Brad Graham started on the pole for the start of the race, which actually commenced on Saturday evening before rain washed the conclusion to Sunday afternoon. The HB Material Handling Dodge driver showed the way for the first 72 laps before he was caught up in lapped traffic and Mike Alguire emerged with the lead in his A-DOR Pontiac.

For a time, it looked like Alguire might collect the first CASCAR feature checkered flag of his career, but it wasn’t to be. While he was being chased by Graham in heavy traffic with just a few laps to go, both of the lead drivers were involved in an incident in turn 2 when a lapped car spun in front of the field. The result was that Alguire and Graham were relegated several positions, handing the lead to McGlynn, who held it to the checkered flag.

“It’s been a long time,” said McGlynn in victory lane at Peterborough. “We were hooked up after making a lot of changes to the car recently. The car is holding the track a lot better. It’s a pleasure to race in this series with so many quality guys.”

Alguire and Graham scrambled over the closing laps to recover to second and third, respectively, at the end of 100 laps. Alguire was understandably frustrated to see the victory disappear so close to the finish, but he was pleased to have been in the hunt. “We had a really good run going. It’s unfortunate what happened with the lapped cars there.”

The race was slowed by five cautions for a total of 20 laps.

The next PowerWater Sportsman Series race takes place on September 17 at Kawartha Speedway near Peterborough, Ontario. The event will decide the 2005 championship.

Peterborough rain out....

Saturday night's show at Peterborough rained out.

Gates open Sunday at 11 am.

The PowerWater Series 100 resumes at lap 9 at noon.

The Super Series race will start at 2:30.

Peterborough Doubleheader Preview

Following a rain-inspired week off, CASCAR will return to Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night for a Super Series / PowerWater Series doubleheader

LONDON, ON – CASCAR will be in action on all three fronts this Saturday, with feature events in its Super Series, PowerWater Sportsman Series and Western Series divisions. Peterborough Speedway’s high-banked, one-third-mile oval will host the bulk of the action as the CASCAR Super Series and the PowerWater Series will converge for a special night of action at the Peterborough-area oval.

The 100-lap PowerWater Series feature race will set the stage for the Peterborough Speedway 200 CASCAR Super Series race; the ninth of 12 events on the 2005 schedule for Canada’s top racing series. The tight Peterborough facility has long been a favourite of CASCAR fans who enjoy old-time, short track racing. The racers enjoy the facility too, in spite of the fact that an outing at Peterborough is guaranteed to produce more than its fair share of damaged bodywork and flared tempers.

Qualifying well and maintaining track position are two keys to success at Peterborough Speedway. Last season, two Super Series races were contested at the track and the winners of both events started their victorious runs from the front row. Mark Dilley, the driver of the #9 Dodge Charger, won at Peterborough on June 12, 2004 after lining up on the outside of the front row. Later in the season, Don Thomson Jr. guided his Home Hardware Chevy to its second checkered flag in as many weeks when he won the Aug. 28, 2004 Super Series race from the pole position.

Following last week’s rainout at Cayuga Speedway, Don Thomson will carry a healthy 89-point lead into Peterborough as he chases his fifth consecutive CASCAR Super Series National championship. The Hamilton, ON racer has always fared well at Peterborough Speedway, but he also knows that it’s the type of track that can bite you in a hurry, in spite of your best efforts to stay out of trouble. Avoiding other peoples’ problems will be a prime concern on Saturday night if Thomson is to maintain his comfort zone over his nearest points challengers Peter Gibbons and DJ Kennington; the latter will be looking to extend his three-race Super Series feature winning streak.

Time trials for Saturday’s PowerWater and Super Series races start at 4:45 p.m. at Peterborough Speedway. The green flag for the PowerWater Series 100 is scheduled to fly at 6:15 p.m. Following that race, the Super Series driver autograph session and driver introductions will set the stage for the start of the 200-lap Super Series race at 8:30 p.m. The Legends Series will also be in action at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday evening.

The CASCAR Western Series will also be busy this Saturday night for its next-to-last race of the 2005 season. Edmonton Int’l Raceway (EIR) in Wetaskiwin, Alberta will play host to the Competition Chevrolet 200.

Western Series points leader Kevin Dowler finds himself in a similar position to his eastern counterpart, Don Thomson, as the schedule reaches its climax. Like Thomson, the Sherwood Park, AB enjoys a healthy points cushion as he pursues his fifth Western Series points championship. Spectator gates for the Competition Chevrolet 200 open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 6:30. Last year’s Western Series stop at EIR was won by Daryl Harr of nearby St. Albert, Alberta. He finished ahead of Dowler’s EMCO Taurus in that race.

CASCAR ON TV: The Mosport Speedway 200 CASCAR Super Series race will air on SPORTSNET EAST on Monday, August 22 at 2 p.m. For information regarding initial airings and replays of Super Series races on SPORTSNET, please check your local listings or visit http://www.cascar.ca/schedule/tv_schedule.html.

CAYUGA RAINED OUT

Today's scheduled CASCAR Super Series race at Cayuga Speedway has been called due to the weather.

The race has been rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8 p.m.

POWERWATER SERIES: Barrie Summary & Results

BARRIE, ON – Dion Verhoeven won Saturday night’s CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series race at Barrie Speedway. The driver of the McRobert Fuels Pontiac started third in the field of 23 for the fourth PowerWater Series race of the season and passed Brad Graham with five laps to go in the race.

Graham, the defending champion of CASCAR’s Sportsman Series, started on the pole for the 100-lap event and looked as though he was going to lead the entire race until contact between he and Verhoeven knocked him out of contention and down to a 10th-place finish. Graham’s pole-winning qualifying effort of 14.366 seconds broke the overall CASCAR qualifying record at Barrie, which was set by Super Series driver Kerry Micks in early July.

Second-place at Barrie went to multi-time PowerWater Series champ Steve Robblee, of Dorchester, ON. London, ON racer Mike Alguire took the final podium position in his Pontiac.

The next outing for the PowerWater Sportsman Series takes place on Saturday, August 20 at Peterborough Speedway.

Super Series: Cayuga Preview

CASCAR heads to Cayuga 2000 Speedway on Sunday for the ninth event of the ’05 Super Series schedule

LONDON, ON – The CASCAR Super Series makes its lone appearance of the season at Cayuga 2000 Speedway on Sunday afternoon for a 200-lap race at the 5/8-mile oval. Because of its size and speed, Cayuga has long been a highly anticipated destination for CASCAR’s racers and fans.
Heading to Cayuga, Don Thomson Jr. leads the Super Series points chase as he continues his quest for a fifth-consecutive CASCAR National championship. The Home Hardware Chevy driver is coming off a runner-up finish in the Mosport Speedway 200 last Saturday night, where DJ Kennington charged around him with just a few turns to go, en route to the win.

Immediately after the race, Thomson was upset to see the victory slip away so close to the checkered flag. But it didn’t take long for the veteran racer to refocus on the big picture. “We have eight races down and four to go. We’d like to get another win in the column, and that’s why I’m a little frustrated with what happened [at Mosport], especially when you lead so many laps and not to seal the deal. But it was another good points night for us and we’ll head to Cayuga right where we want to be.”

And while Don Thomson is pleased with his position in the overall points, DJ Kennington is looking for his fourth CASCAR Super Series feature event win in a row, at Cayuga. “Our good run started at Toronto [where he started on the pole] and it’s just gone from there. We’ve had a strong car every race all season, but the difference lately is that the little things that were biting us, aren’t biting us anymore. I can’t describe how good this run feels; it’s just amazing.”

The Castrol Dodge driver is starting to display a level of confidence that indicates he believes he can challenge Thomson and points runner-up Peter Gibbons for the title over the final third of the schedule. “We’re concentrating on our Super Series program right now and that has made a big difference. We still have a long way to go to catch Donnie, but we’re climbing and that’s what we have to continue to do.”

Time trials for Sunday’s Super Series race at Cayuga are scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. The green flag is set to fly at 2:30 p.m. A Thunder Car feature race will follow the Super Series event.

CAYUGA NOTEBOOK: In 2004, the Super Series visited Cayuga 2000 Speedway on two occasions. In the first, on June 6, Peter Gibbons led the final 30 laps of the PowerWater 200 after starting third in the 32-car field. Dave Whitlock won the second Cayuga race last summer (on July 4), after a pit miscue thwarted Gibbons’ chances for a Cayuga sweep. Last year’s top rookie, Pete Shepherd, started on the pole in that race and went on to finish fifth.

CASCAR ON TV: The Sun Valley 300 CASCAR Super Series race from Sun Valley Speedway in BC’s Okanagan Valley will air on SPORTSNET on Saturday, August 13 at 3 p.m. For information regarding initial airings and replays of Super Series races on SPORTSNET, please check your local listings or visit http://www.cascar.ca/schedule/tv_schedule.html.

POWERWATER SPORTSMAN SERIES: The CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series returns to action this Saturday night at Barrie Speedway. The event will be the fourth of six on the 2005 PowerWater schedule and the second of the season at Barrie Speedway. The tour last visited the 3/8-mile oval on July 2 when hometown driver and rookie competitor Ron Lethbridge led all 100 laps of the PowerWater 100 en route to his first series win.

TONIGHT: MARK DILLEY AND KASEY KAHNE TO COMPARE NUMBER 9 DODGE CHARGERS AT NASCAR SPEEDPARK

TORONTO, ON – Kasey Kahne, driver of the # 9 Dodge Charger in NASCAR Nextel Cup, and Mark Dilley, driver of the # 9 Dodge Charger in the CASCAR Super Series, will be comparing notes on their respective Dodge Charger race cars at NASCAR SpeedPark in Vaughan Mills tonight (Thursday August 11th).

NASCAR SpeedPark has invited Kahne to their exciting facility to sign autographs and partake in some races against fans on one of the facilities many go kart tracks. Kahne will be at the facility from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and will be joined by Dilley at the same time. Fans must have a wristband to get an autograph. They are available at NASCAR SpeedPark on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 10:00 am on Thursday August 11th.

Dilley will have his # 9 Dodge Charger on display at the event, and Dilley and Kahne are slated to go at it on the track as well; in slightly less powerful Dodge Charger replica go karts. The appearance of the NASCAR Nextel Cup and CASCAR Super Series stars together is reflective of the current stock car racing landscape in Canada, where NASCAR and CASCAR entered into a marketing and management partnership late in 2004.

Dilley currently sits fourth in the CASCAR Super Series Championship and is coming off a fourth place finish at Mosport Speedway last weekend, while Kahne currently sits 21st in the NASCAR Nextel Cup standings and is coming off a second place finish at the 400 at The Brickyard this past Sunday.

A great time is in store for NASCAR and CASCAR fans alike, so come on by NASCAR SpeedPark in Vaughan Mills this Thursday August 11th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Please visit www.NASCARSpeedPark.com for Wristband Policy or call 905-669-7370 for more information.

CASCAR SS: Kennington wins again

DJ Kennington wins his third CASCAR Super Series race in a row with a late-race pass on Don Thomson in Saturday night’s Mosport Speedway 200

BOWMANVILLE, ON – DJ Kennington extended his CASCAR Super Series winning streak to three feature events on Saturday night when he passed Don Thomson on lap 198 of the Mosport Speedway 200. Thomson had started on the pole and led the virtually the entire race in dominant fashion, but a late caution flag set up a battle between he and Kennington for the final 11 laps.

Following the lap 189 restart, Kennington dogged Thomson’s Home Hardware Chevy for several tours around Mosport Speedway’s half-mile oval. And after a handful of failed attempts to go underneath Thomson as the pair exited turn 2, the Castrol Dodge driver changed strategy and powered to the outside of the four-time National champion just prior to the start of the final lap.

From there, Kennington moved in front of Thomson and beat him to the checkered flag by just over a third of a second. The victory by the St. Thomas, ON racer mirrored his July 30 win at Vernon, BC’s Sun Valley Speedway when he passed Brad Graham just before the end of the race.

“Our car wasn’t the best one on the track for most of the race, but it was the best one when it counted,” said Kennington. “All that matters is that we led the last lap. I wanted to save the tires and the brakes for the end. I knew Donnie was going to run away with the race because he’s awesome here. That caution at the end made all the difference because he was so far ahead before that, that he was in a different area code. Our car is set up to come on at the end and that’s what happened again tonight.”

Thomson, who has won at Mosport many times in the past, was understandably frustrated to see the win slip away after holding commanding leads for the majority of the 200 laps. According to the Hamilton, ON racer, the set of right-side tires that went on the car during the lap 100 pit stop didn’t perform as well as the set that started the race, and that made the difference at the end.

The final podium spot at Mosport Speedway went to Ron Beauchamp Jr., driver of the MOPAR Parts / Exide / Mobil 1 Dodge Charger. The Windsor, ON racer started second in the field of 20 and overcame handling problems with 50 laps to go to take third-place in the eighth of 12 Super Series events in ’05.
The next CASCAR Super Series event takes place August 14 at Cayuga 2000 Speedway, south of Hamilton, Ontario.

SUPER SERIES: Don Thomson Jr. leads the points as the CASCAR Super Series returns to Ontario for Saturday night’s Mosport Speedway 200

LONDON, ON – After a pair of races in Western Canada in late July, the CASCAR Super Series returns to Ontario this weekend for the Mosport Speedway 200. The Saturday, August 6 race is the eighth of 12 events on the 2005 Super Series schedule featuring Canada’s top stock car drivers.

When you think of CASCAR Super Series events at Mosport Speedway, the dominance that Don Thomson Jr. has displayed at the half-mile speedway over the years immediately comes to mind.

The Home Hardware Chevy driver earned checkered flags at the Mosport oval in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004. Thomson’s record of success at the Bowmanville, ON-area speedway doesn’t bode well for those currently chasing the Super Series points leader as he strives for his fifth CASCAR National championship in a row. Heading to Mosport, Thomson has a healthy 61-point lead over two-time National champion Peter Gibbons.

And while he’s only in third-place, the hottest driver on the CASCAR circuit is DJ Kennington of St. Thomas, ON. The Castrol Canada Dodge driver scored back-to-back wins to sweep the series’ western swing. And before that, he sat on the pole and led the way early in the CASCAR race at the Toronto Indy, until a flat tire took him out of contention for the win.

Prior to last year, Kennington was a perennial Super Series championship contender. He’s now showing the form that put him among the series’ front-runners prior to his ‘off season’ in 2004. The Dodge driver’s dominant performances at Race City Motorsport Park and Sun Valley Speedway vaulted him from 10th to third in the National title hunt, with five points races remaining on the schedule. The young ‘Ironman’ of the CASCAR circuit has to make up 105 points on Thomson if he’s to win his first CASCAR crown.

Time trials for the Mosport Speedway 200 take place starting at 4:30 p.m. at the half-mile speedway. The green flag is scheduled to start the 200-lap feature event at 7:00 p.m.

CASCAR AT MOSPORT: The 2003 edition of the Mosport Speedway 200 is widely considered to be one of the best races in CASCAR history. On Aug. 23, 2003, Don Thomson started on the pole and battled with Kerry Micks throughout the entire 200 lap race.
Officially, the pair swapped the lead an astounding 11 times. Unofficially, Thomson and Micks – who were also the two top points racers at the time – exchanged the top spot many more times than that, given that official lead changes are only recorded at the start/finish line. Thomson and Micks were the only two leaders during the entire event. Micks eventually took the lead for the final time on lap 190, and came home less than half-a-second in front of Thomson.

CASCAR NOTEBOOK: Last year’s CASCAR Super Series rookie of the year Pete Shepherd has made the cut to the final 12 at the Roush ‘Gong Show’. The Brampton, ON racer was part of the original group of 25 talented young racers who participated in a NASCAR Truck test at Martinsville Speedway.
