Shawn McGlynn makes his first trip to CASCAR’s victory lane in Sunday’s PowerWater Series race at Peterborough Speedway
PETERBOROUGH, ON – Sunday was a day of firsts for CASCAR PowerWater Series racer Shawn McGlynn. The Kitchener, ON resident won his first-ever CASCAR race when he took the victory in the Parkhill Excavating 100 at Peterborough Speedway.
And although he only led the final four laps of the 100-lap affair, they were the first feature race laps the McGlynn Ford Taurus driver has ever led in CASCAR action.
Reigning PowerWater Series champion Brad Graham started on the pole for the start of the race, which actually commenced on Saturday evening before rain washed the conclusion to Sunday afternoon. The HB Material Handling Dodge driver showed the way for the first 72 laps before he was caught up in lapped traffic and Mike Alguire emerged with the lead in his A-DOR Pontiac.
For a time, it looked like Alguire might collect the first CASCAR feature checkered flag of his career, but it wasn’t to be. While he was being chased by Graham in heavy traffic with just a few laps to go, both of the lead drivers were involved in an incident in turn 2 when a lapped car spun in front of the field. The result was that Alguire and Graham were relegated several positions, handing the lead to McGlynn, who held it to the checkered flag.
“It’s been a long time,” said McGlynn in victory lane at Peterborough. “We were hooked up after making a lot of changes to the car recently. The car is holding the track a lot better. It’s a pleasure to race in this series with so many quality guys.”
Alguire and Graham scrambled over the closing laps to recover to second and third, respectively, at the end of 100 laps. Alguire was understandably frustrated to see the victory disappear so close to the finish, but he was pleased to have been in the hunt. “We had a really good run going. It’s unfortunate what happened with the lapped cars there.”
The race was slowed by five cautions for a total of 20 laps.
The next PowerWater Sportsman Series race takes place on September 17 at Kawartha Speedway near Peterborough, Ontario. The event will decide the 2005 championship.
